US-made, full-colour, cut edge
Ca. 1955 - 1958: Specialist Third Class
Ca. 1958 onward: Specialist 4
This type of Specialist rank was issued circa. 1955-1960s. Originally worn by both men and women, this design later became obsolete for male personnel in 1958 when it was changed to the larger type. There are however period photographs of these being worn in Vietnam by male soldiers until around 1965-1966.
Cut-edge, full-colour insignia were worn on all uniforms until they were gradually phased out by subdued insignia and pin-on collar rank from approx. 1966 to 1968. Beyond that, they were usually restricted to non-combat uniforms such as Utilities, Class A, and Class B uniforms. Notably, this type of full-colour, cut-edge rank was worn by early advisors circa. 1961 onward, and regular infantry circa. 1965-1966.
