The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, known as the "Apaches," was a distinguished unit within the 101st Airborne Division during World War II, earning a formidable reputation for its combat performance in Europe. After the war, the unit underwent several reorganisations, eventually becoming part of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Cold War period.
In the 1950s, the 501st served under the 82nd Airborne Division as a key airborne infantry unit during a tense era of global geopolitical rivalry. Stationed primarily at Fort Bragg, the 501st focused on rapid deployment readiness, large-scale airborne training exercises, and maintaining a combat-effective posture in case of Soviet aggression. Though not deployed in combat during this decade, the regiment played a crucial role in the development of airborne doctrine and Cold War deterrence.
During the Vietnam War, elements of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment were reactivated as part of the 101st Airborne Division and deployed to Southeast Asia. The regiment, including the 1st and 2nd Battalions, saw extensive combat throughout the conflict, participating in major operations such as Operation Nevada Eagle and the fighting in the A Shau Valley.
The M-1951 field jacket carried over several design aspects and features from its predecessor, the M-1943. The overall design is very similar, with only a few key elements that were added or improved upon. The main front closure is secured with a zip, covered by a snap-fastener-lined flap and the pockets are also secured with snap-fasteners.
The Olive Green 107 (OG-107) shell is a treated 9-ounce wind-resistant cotton sateen, lined with a lightweight wind-resistant cotton poplin. There are buttons that accommodate a removable insulated liner that can be attached for colder weather. During the 1960s, many officers preferred the sharper look of the M-1951 instead of the then-standard M-1965 jacket.
