An original early-war USMC boonie made from reversible M1942 ‘Frogskin’ camouflage poncho material in Okinawa, Japan. These were typically worn by USMC advisors to South Vietnamese forces during the advisory period of the Vietnam War. Made from a WW2 vintage poncho, these hats are entirely waterproof which makes for an ideal item of headwear for the tropics of Vietnam. This example displays the remnants of a white cotton size label. It features one small grey-painted metal eyelet on either side for ventilation.
When the hat was found, someone had stitched a large reproduction patch to the top, at the same time, the embroidery was added using the same thread to construct the patch. There was damage present before we removed the patch which I have repaired using colour-matched 100% cotton thread and a patch made with original USGI 100% cotton ripstop poplin, recycled from a heavily damaged pair of tropical combat trousers. The embroidery will be impossible to remove without causing damage to the brim, so it remains.
The final photo shows the underside of the hat before I completed the repairs. It displays an originally applied name "Cpl. C. F. Cameron" - The original owner. Sadly, the only way to repair the crown effectively was to apply a patch underneath which covers the name.
